A new worksite is opening on state road 36 of Lake Como and the Spluga. Following the arrangements shared at the meeting of the Comitato Operativo per la Viabilita, held at the Prefecture of Sondrio on 7 October 2026, ANAS will carry out extraordinary maintenance works to protect the road surface from the risk of rockfall, on the stretch between kilometre 101+000 and kilometre 101+135, in the territory of the municipality of Verceia, in the province of Sondrio.

The works: a rock spur and a slope to be made safe

The works involve the demolition of a rock spur and the securing of the slope above the carriageway, operations needed to reduce the risks for drivers. The operating arrangements were defined after the discussion of the Comitato Operativo per la Viabilita, which met at the Prefecture on 7 October 2026. The measures will concern exclusively the segment of the state road between the two kilometre markers indicated, in the municipality of Verceia.

The two phases of restrictions

The first phase will run from Monday 19 to Friday 23 October 2026, with alternating one-way traffic active only on weekdays, between 8.30 am and 5 pm. During the evening and night hours, and over the weekend of 24 and 25 October, two-way traffic will be maintained. The second phase will start on Monday 26 October and continue until Friday 27 November 2026, with restrictions in force continuously, 24 hours a day and seven days a week, including holidays and pre-holidays.

Between 26 October and 2 November the restrictions may vary, depending on the progress of the works, technical and operational needs and weather conditions. Drivers should pay attention to the signage installed near the worksite.

What changes for travellers

Traffic will remain guaranteed in any case, but alternating one-way working may cause slowdowns and waiting times for those crossing the stretch while the works are under way. The site affects a short segment of the state road, 135 metres, but one placed along the axis that links Lecco and the upper Lake Como with Valchiavenna and Valtellina: an obligatory passage for commuters, freight and tourist traffic heading north.

The works aim to improve the protection of the road from rockfall and to safeguard both SS36 users and the workers engaged in the activities. For real-time traffic updates, the reference remains the official notices of ANAS and the Prefecture of Sondrio.
