One evening a public meeting calling for more safety on state road 639, the next morning another crash on the same road. The sequence has put the Lecco to Bergamo link back at the centre of debate: the road runs from Calolziocorte down towards Cisano Bergamasco through Levata, a hamlet of Monte Marenzo. On October 13, at the Kong S.p.A. premises in Monte Marenzo, mayors, provincial and regional councillors and residents discussed the problems of the stretch between Levata and the Cesare Cantù bridge roundabout, and asked for its upgrade to become a regional priority.
The meeting was promoted by the municipalities of Monte Marenzo, Cisano Bergamasco and Calolziocorte. The three mayors, Paola Colombo, Antonella Sesana and Marco Ghezzi, want to push Anas and Regione Lombardia to speed up the so-called Levata lot. Their requests are threefold: widening the carriageway between Bisone, Levata and Sala, a stretch also used daily by heavy vehicles; extraordinary maintenance of the road surface, described as worn; and a continuous cycle and pedestrian path between Calolziocorte and Cisano Bergamasco, where protected routes for pedestrians are currently lacking.
Regional councillors commit to the push
Regional councillors from the Lecco and Bergamo areas took part, among them Gian Mario Fragomeli, Giacomo Zamperini, Mauro Piazza, Jonathan Lobati, Jacopo Scandella, Davide Casati, Giovanni Malanchini, Pietro Macconi and Michele Schiavi. According to the meeting report, they agreed to back the area's requests: supporting a motion to include the work in the regional mobility and transport plan, promoting a framework agreement between the Ministry and Anas to define funding and an updated technical design, and monitoring the stretch's historical accident data. Mayors and councillors announced stable coordination and regular updates to residents on the technical talks.
The October 14 head-on crash
A few hours after the meeting, on the morning of October 14, the road was in the news again. At Calolziocorte, near a roundabout, a 71-year-old man driving a Suzuki Vitara collided head-on with a truck. He was cut free from the wreckage by Areu medics and firefighters and suffered several injuries. As Il Giorno reported, state road 639 was temporarily closed, with knock-on effects on traffic across the area. The crash was not connected to the previous evening's meeting, but it happened on the same road whose safety the mayors and residents had been demanding.
For now the file remains at the level of requests and political commitments: no funding and no timetable have been announced. The test in the coming months will be the formal steps named at the Monte Marenzo table, from the regional motion to any agreement with Anas. Meanwhile the Bisone, Levata and Sala stretch keeps carrying daily traffic between the two provinces, commuters and heavy vehicles included. Translated from Italian.
